May Day International Labor Day

The International Labor Day, also known as the "May Day Labor Day," is a national holiday in more than 80 countries around the world. It is scheduled on May 1 of each year. It is a festival shared by working people all over the world.

In July 1889, the Second International, led by Engels, held a congress in Paris. The meeting passed a resolution that stipulates that international laborers marched on May 1, 1890, and decided to designate May 1st as the International Labor Day. The Central People's Government Administration Council made a decision in December 1949 to determine May 1st as Labor Day. After 1989, the State Council commended the nation’s model workers and advanced workers every five years, and commended about 3,000 people each time.


After the founding of New China, the Government of the People’s Government of the Central People’s Government established May 1 as the statutory Labor Day in December 1949, and the country’s holiday day. On this day of the year, the whole nation celebrated. People put on holiday costumes and gathered happily in parks, theaters, and plazas to participate in various celebration ceremonies or cultural and recreational activities. They also commended those who have made outstanding contributions.
